Unusual and heavy snowfall blanketed parts of South Africa, causing widespread disruption, the national meteorological service reported on Sunday.
In a statement, the South African Weather Service highlighted that the unexpected weather event took many by surprise, significantly affecting transportation, infrastructure, and daily routines.
Several major highways and roads were shut down due to snow accumulation, resulting in traffic congestion and delays.
A user on X, Kristy Tallman, expressed frustration, writing, “Exceptional snowfall in South Africa: Highway between Durban and Johannesburg BLOCKED due to ice and snow, causing major disruptions.”
Social media platforms were flooded with videos capturing the rare snowfall.
Public transportation was also severely impacted, with trains and buses forced to halt operations in some areas.
Local media, citing unconfirmed reports, indicated that two people may have died from hypothermia amid the extreme weather conditions.
Emergency services have been working non-stop to clear roads and restore power, while authorities urged residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
